Gallingisatypeofmechanicalwearcausedbyacombinationoffrictionandadhesionbetweenslidingsurfacestypicallyunderacompressiveload.Itistheresultoftearingandslippingofthecrystalstructureatthesurfaceoncetheprotectivechromiumoxidelayerhaswornaway.Furthermechanicalforcescausethematerialtobecomestuckorweldedtothematingsurface,andultimatelyresultsintheseizingofinterfacingcomponents.Inthecaseoffasteners,thisisproblematicsinceagalledfastenerassemblyhastobedrilledorcuttoberemoved.
